Soft Measures is a small team that builds and runs a portfolio of software companies. The names and markets change; the way we work doesn't. Here's the thinking underneath all of it.

We build companies, then keep running them.

Soft Measures is a studio and a holding company, not a fund and not an agency. We start businesses, ship them, and stay to operate them. That single choice shapes everything downstream: we'd rather have a company that quietly pays its own way for a decade than a demo that raises a round and disappears. Owning the thing you built keeps you honest about whether it actually works.

Durability over the exit. We optimize for a business that runs for years, not a story that sells.
Skin in the game. We run these companies ourselves, so the software has to survive contact with real customers.
A portfolio, not a pipeline. Each company stands alone, and together they compound.

Everything runs on the same engine underneath.

Every company in the portfolio is built on EightMind — our multi-agent framework — and the shared kit of capabilities that comes with it. A new venture inherits RAG grounding, a report engine, memory, human-approval gates, and daily automation on day one, instead of rebuilding them. The mechanics stay in house; what ships is the outcome. This is why a small team can credibly run eleven companies at once.

Inherited, not rebuilt. New companies start with years of tooling already behind them.
Teams of agents, not one model. Bounded agents each own a clear responsibility and its own domain.

Boring markets, hard problems.

We're drawn to markets that are unglamorous but real — surgical supply, home-services leads, grant writing, local SEO, career verification — where demand is obvious and the incumbents still run on spreadsheets and phone calls. Then we look for the hard part: a technical or operational edge that software and agents can actually deliver. Boring plus hard is the sweet spot. Exciting plus easy is a crowd.

Real demand first. Someone is already paying to solve this, badly, right now.
An edge we can build. The problem has to reward better software, not just better marketing.
Something agents can run. If it can't become standing, self-operating work, it's not for us.

Agents do the work; a person holds authority.

Agents work freely right up to the point of consequence. Anything that touches a live system — money, a customer, a published page, a trade — waits for a human to decide. Safety isn't a promise we make about the model's behavior; it's a property of how the system is built, so it holds as the portfolio scales. That boundary is also what lets us move fast without being reckless.

Free until it counts. Autonomy on the work, approval at the moment of consequence.
Structural, not hopeful. The guardrail is in the architecture, not in a prompt.
Legible by design. You can always see what an agent did and why.

Correctness is earned, and momentum is a feature.

We don't publish multi-quarter roadmaps that never arrive. Everything is built to be executable now, and work only counts once it meets the standard — quality is enforced before anything ships. We reuse proven patterns and battle-tested tools first, and write net-new code only where it earns its keep. The result is a set of companies that are real today, not pitches for something that might be real later.

Executable now. If it can't ship this week in some form, we rescope until it can.
Proven before hand-rolled. The cheapest code is the code someone else already hardened.
Earned, not asserted. Quality gates run before anything reaches a customer.
